Agile Digital Transformation Project to Efficiently Distribute and Manage the Vessel Capacity and Automate Booking Processes for a Globally Leading Shipping Company

The Challenge

The project faced several challenges, including high manual effort to evaluate utilization level, current booking situation, and probability of execution on a case-by-case basis. The team had to spend significant time and effort to assess each situation, which was inefficient and time-consuming.

Additionally, there was a lack of global business process transparency and communication between teams, which made it difficult to coordinate efforts effectively. This led to misunderstandings and delays, which impacted the overall efficiency of the project.

Another challenge was the lack of demand forecasting mechanisms, which made it challenging to accurately plan vessel space allocation. The team had to rely on estimates, which were often inaccurate, resulting in inefficiencies and wasted resources.

Furthermore, the business model relied heavily on high-volume contracts rather than participating in the spot market. This led to a lack of flexibility, making it challenging to respond to changes in the market and adapt to new situations.

The project had a significant impact on the bottom line, resulting in increased utilization and margins of transported containers.

The Approach

By collaborating with Eraneos our customer tackled several challenges, including the definition and implementation of time-series demand and utilization forecasting models based on Big Data analytics. This allowed the team to make more accurate predictions about demand and utilization, leading to improved planning and resource allocation.

The team also set up and executed an agile IT project to automatically determine booking acceptance based on industry models and predictive analytics. This automated process streamlined the booking process and made it more efficient, enabling the team to make better use of their resources.
Furthermore, the team fully integrated the new system into the existing landscape, automating manual processes and reducing the amount of time and effort required to manage the system.

The newly automated processes improved overall efficiency and performance, making it easier for the team to achieve their goals.

The Result

Through the collaboration with Eraneos our customer implemented new forecasting models and the use of predictive analytics allowed the team to make more informed decisions, leading to better planning and resource allocation. The automation of manual processes and the integration of the new system into the existing landscape also contributed to the project’s success, making it easier for the team to manage the system and achieve their objectives.
