These capabilities are harnessed in two primary ways: AI applications and AI solutions. While AI applications focus on specific functionalities like machine learning, natural language processing, and computer vision, AI solutions take these applications further, integrating them into comprehensive systems designed to address specific business challenges.

AI tools offer exceptional capabilities in various applications, including customer service, content creation, reporting, decision making, and data analysis. The integration of AI tools is revolutionizing industries such as healthcare, retail, finance, and beyond, providing organizations with unparalleled benefits.

By leveraging AI tools, businesses can achieve heightened efficiency, allowing them to devote more time and resources to their core operations and strategic initiatives. Furthermore, AI empowers companies to enhance their business processes and elevate customer service experiences.

A key advantage of AI tools lies in their ability to analyze and leverage vast amounts of data for expedited and improved decision-making. AI and Cybersecurity: The Double-Edged Sword

The integration of AI tools into cybersecurity is akin to wielding a double-edged sword. On one side, AI offers numerous benefits that can significantly enhance our ability to protect digital assets. However, the same AI technologies that fortify our defenses can also be weaponized by cyber adversaries

Advantages of AI in Cyber Security
As in many other fields, AI can add significant value to the daily work of security professionals. The capacity of AI to process large amounts of data and apply pattern recognition will alleviate human cyber security professionals from tedious data analysis work. The application of triage will allow cyber security professionals to allocate their time and efforts to high priority cases. Many cyber security tools provide AI powered technology to increase the effectiveness of their tooling and allow the increase of efficiency for scarce cyber security human resources. There are four ways in which AI can increase the effectiveness of security work:

  • Trend & pattern analysis: The capacity of Machine Learning algorithms to learn and predict patterns, as well as identify outliers has been successfully improve the capacity of a range of tooling, such as End User Behavior Analysis, Network Traffic Monitoring, Phishing, Malware & Zero Day Threat Detection and Fraud Detection.
  • Identity & access management: IAM tooling providers provide functionality to further control who has access to what, leveraging cloud access control and context based access control.
  • Incident response: AI technology further elevates the effectiveness of incident responseThe improvement of Intrusion Prevention Systems allow smart and quick response to identified threats. automated incident triage allows for scarce time of cyber security professionals to be focussed at high priority events.
  • Security automation: AI boosts the potential for the automation of several labor intensive tasks such as patch & vulnerability management, misconfiguration detection & recommendation and system hardening, and the execution of predictive security analysis.

Threats posed by the introduction of Artificial Intelligence
One concern is the training of AI models for advanced phishing attacks, social engineering, fraud, and theft. Attackers can exploit AI capabilities to deploy increasingly convincing and targeted attacks that are challenging to detect with current security solutions. Europol recently warned that AI could help criminals launch more targeted attacks.

AI enables the rapid creation of advanced malware, facilitating “zero-day attacks” that can remain undetected, causing extensive damage. Recently a Forcepoint researcher showcased the potential risks of AI in cybersecurity by developing a sophisticated zero-day malware using ChatGPT.

The experiment was conducted as follows:

  • Creation: Utilizing ChatGPT to generate malware code, effectively bypassing the AI’s built-in safeguards against producing harmful content.
  • Disguise: The malware was embedded within a seemingly harmless screensaver app, which, once installed, would automatically execute and search for sensitive files such as images, PDFs, and Word documents.
  • Stealth: To evade detection, the malware employed steganography, hiding stolen data within images that were then uploaded to a Google Drive folder, making the data transfer difficult to detect.
  • Evasion: Initially, only a few antivirus programs detected the malware. The code was continuously refining with ChatGPT prompts until it became nearly undetectable.

This is just one of many examples. Furthermore, cybercriminals can manipulate AI systems by injecting false data, leading to incorrect predictions or decisions. Privacy violations and data breaches also pose significant security risks, as AI models necessitate large volumes of data to operate effectively, thereby increasing the likelihood of breaches and misuse of sensitive personal information.

This underscores the dual-edged nature of AI in cybersecurity. While AI can enhance defenses, it also poses new challenges. Vigilance and innovation are key to staying ahead.

Risks arising with the implementation of AI

The implementation of AI powered tools bring their own set of risks, In order to remain in control, as well as comply with e.g. the European AI act and the General Data Protection Regulation, these risks should be addressed prior to the actual implementation of AI in the organisation. Example risks for AI implementations include (not limitative):

  • Misuse of data: GDPR gives individuals the right to bring civil claims for compensation, including for distress, for personal data breaches.
  • Unfairness, discrimination and bias: There is an inherent risk of AI incorporating biased datasets and creating biased outcomes, which can lead to unfair or discriminatory decision making.
  • Insufficient control: Existing regulatory principles apply to AI as well, meaning that firms need to be mindful of an overreliance on automation, insufficient oversight and ineffective systems (as for any existing processes). Institutions need to be able to produce a description of their algo-trading strategies within a short amount of time.
  • Market abuse: This risk is focused on procedures countering the risk that AI is used to further financial crime, including the testing of algorithms to assess the impact they may have on market integrity, alongside post-trade monitoring. If trading on the basis of big data analysis, firms need to be sure that datasets do not contain confidential information (whether from within the firm or elsewhere) that amount to inside information. Institutions need to ensure that an AI, unconstrained and exposed to certain markets and data, does not deem it entirely rational to commit market manipulation. Firms also need to have systems in place to prevent and detect such forms of market misconduct by their clients.
  • Liability in contract and unlawful acts: AI usage (whether by a firm’s suppliers or by the firm with its customers) may give rise to unintended consequences and may expose institutions to claims for breach of contract or unlawful acts, and test the boundaries of existing exclusion clauses. Firms need to assess whether their existing terms and conditions remain fit for purpose, where AI is concerned.
  • Overreliance on the quality of output: Especially generative AI may generate false or incorrect output that goes unnoticed following a lack of checking by the institution. This may for example occur as a result of a general lack of quality of training data, or underfitting or overfitting during training.
  • Insufficient data quality of training data: As stated above, a lack of quality of training data may lead to false or incorrect output of an AI algorithm.
  • Non-transparency of decision making: AI algorithms take complex decisions based on large amounts of data. Institutions need to be able to explain why an algorithm takes certain decisions
  • Breach of law and regulation: Currently, AI is subjected to the same legislation as non-AI technology. Mainly with regard to privacy (GDPR), AI may introduce breaches. Also note the upcoming AI act (see section 6)
  • Breach of confidentiality: Where AI is implemented on a cloud base, sensitive data may be leaked to suppliers and/or other clients.
  • Breach of accountability: Accountability cannot be delegated to a machine. Ultimate responsibility lies with senior management
  • Multiple languages: Namely with generative AI, an AI typically only supports a single language. Multiple implementations are potentially required trained with diverse training sets, which may lead to inconsistencies in algorithm output.
  • Lack of available knowledge: Not only the implementers of AI need to have a detailed understanding of AI, also functions as legal, compliance, risk and audit need to have a basic understanding of the topic to empower them to review any AI implementation.
  • Haywire trading: AI algorithms used in algorithmic trading may make mistakes, and as such cause significant losses when not controlled (as was the case in the Knight Capital incident in 2012, leading to a $440m loss in a couple of minutes).

Addressing Security Risks

To effectively address the security risks associated with both the implementation of AI tools, as well as face new capabilities of threat actors, organizations must implement robust security protocols and adopt a proactive approach to safeguarding their operations. This entails conducting rigorous vulnerability testing of AI models to identify potential weaknesses and vulnerabilities that could be exploited by malicious actors. Additionally, the implementation of AI tools should be preceded by robust risk analysis, identifying, measuring and where necessary controlling relevant risks that arise with AI implementations. Privacy-sensitive data collected and analyzed by AI systems must be handled with the utmost care. Organizations should prioritize the implementation of stringent data protection measures, including encryption, access controls, and secure storage practices. By employing these measures, the risk of data breaches and unauthorized access can be significantly mitigated, and compliance with the GDPR is maintained.

Training and awareness programs are essential components of a comprehensive security strategy. Employees should be educated about the potential risks associated with AI tools and trained to identify and respond to security threats effectively. By fostering a culture of security awareness, organizations can empower their workforce to become the first line of defense against cyber attacks.

Collaboration and information sharing within the industry are also crucial in addressing AI-related security risks. Organizations should actively participate in relevant forums, share best practices, and stay updated on emerging threats and vulnerabilities. By leveraging collective knowledge and expertise, the industry can respond effectively to new and evolving security challenges.

Regulatory frameworks like the EU AI Act and the AI Risk Management Framework can support secure AI deployment by promoting transparency, accountability, and compliance.

Additionally, continuous monitoring and threat intelligence gathering are essential for staying ahead of potential security risks. Organizations should invest in advanced security solutions that leverage machine learning and AI algorithms to detect and respond to emerging threats effectively. By integrating these technologies into their security infrastructure, organizations can enhance their ability to detect and mitigate potential risks.

It is important to recognize that addressing security risks is an ongoing process. As AI technology evolves and new vulnerabilities emerge, organizations must remain adaptable and responsive to changing threats. Regular security assessments, updates, and patches should be conducted to ensure that AI systems are equipped with the latest defenses against emerging security risks.
