Why focus on flexibility management?

Flexibility management enables organizations to balance energy supply and demand efficiently by adjusting the generation, consumption or storage of energy. This is becoming increasingly significant due to the energy transition from fossil fuels to sustainable sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower, driven by the ambitious climate targets the Dutch government has set to reduce the greenhouse gas emission by 55% and generate 70% of electricity sustainably by 2030. Traditional energy grids were built for predictable, controllable power generation, while renewables are inherently variable and volatile –fluctuating due to varying environmental conditions. This variability in energy supply can lead to net congestion on the grid.

Flexibility management ensures a stable energy supply as the use of renewable sources grows. Players in the energy value chain will need to invest in new technologies and business models that prioritize flexibility and prevent net congestion. A recent example is the Battery Storage Agreement between TenneT and GIGA Storage, which utilizes a large battery system to store excess energy and balance the grid, ensuring a stable power supply despite the unpredictability of renewable energy sources.
