Design of an IoT Architecture for Dry Container Monitoring Connecting Over 1.6 Million Assets

The Challenge

The shipping company entered a strategic partnership with two different IoT hardware vendors to provide IoT devices and their raw data for their entire container fleet with over 1.6 million million assets. Our client needed to create a IoT platform to save, transform and merge the raw input data and make it usable for their external live service for external customers and their internal functions. A decision for the design of the platform architecture needed to be established and prepared to be able to start in time and to deliver real-time tracking data for their assets to end customers.

“Dry container monitoring brings visibility to our current blindspots and answers the question for our clients – Where is my container now?”

The Approach

Eraneos’ approach was based on its best practice for platform architecture. We carried out a Use-Case Workshops with involved stakeholders from the functional and non-functional side to create architecture requirements.

After the specification of all requirements, we focused on different vendor solutions and finalized a deep dive with four most relevant providers based on all requirements set.

We then finalized several IoT Architecture approaches with detailed components and connections with internal systems for further steps and a short list of external suppliers and ready for implementation.

Performing vendor evaluation as well as a reference architecture design based on functional and non-functional impact analysis and creating clear next steps for implementing and connecting an IoT Architecture

The Result

Eraneos was able to complete all objectives from the sourcing strategy for this project. This included:

  • Created a Use Canvas for all commercial and operational use cases of the client
  • Established a IoT Platform vendor evaluation criteria catalogue with 4 provider deep dives and usable for further RFI’s
  • Designed IT Architecture based on several possibilities and major vendors in the market for Top Management Decision
  • Suggested next steps to enable a fast ramp up of the IoT Platform

Successfully completing the above laid the foundation for the IoT Architecture for the container shipping platform enabled them to carry out the next phase, namely realization and implementation.

Let’s create sustainable change together.
