Defining a Global and Scalable IT Strategy for Developing & Operating Autonomous Trucks for a Leading North American Commercial Vehicle Manufacturer

The Challenge

The client had encountered the challenge of establishing a global IT infrastructure and operating model that could support the development of autonomous trucks at scale. At the time, the company lacked an IT strategy, as well as an autonomous driving operating model that could facilitate collaboration between the client and a recently acquired company specializing in algorithm development for autonomous vehicles.

Five fundamental blocks for the IT Strategy to enable Automomous Driving and close collaboration between IT and engineering

The Approach

An As-Is analysis was conducted to gain insights into the client’s current state of autonomous driving. Based on this analysis, five fundamental building blocks were developed, along with related action fields to outline the critical next steps for the client.

The IT strategy was developed through close collaboration between IT and engineering, with a focus on addressing the identified building blocks and action fields. To ensure a structured approach to implementation, a development roadmap was established, which prioritized IT topics and identified the necessary steps for their successful implementation.

Our deep exptertise in autonomous vehicles were instrumental in defining the IT strategy for the development of autonomous trucks.

The Result

The client was able to establish five fundamental building blocks (External Factors, Vision & Strategy, Platform & Technology, Operating Model, Knowledge Source) that were specifically designed for the development of autonomous trucks.

To ensure a clear understanding and effective implementation of the strategy, a detailed presentation was provided, which included a deep dive into each of the 12 focus areas (Operating Model, Workplace, Scalable Architecture, Framework & Methodology, Connectivity Integration, Cybersecurity, Cloud Management, Data Management, Software Development Toolchain, Vehicle Control Center, Truck AD Lifecycle Management and Data Analytics and Service Monetization). This enabled the client to gain a clear understanding of the services provided by IT and prioritize them accordingly.

Furthermore, an operating model was derived based on the services provided by each focus area. This enabled the client to establish a structured approach to implementation and ensured that the IT strategy was aligned with the overall business strategy.

Let’s create sustainable change together.
